The differentiation between rabbinic thought and the Essene theological system enables us to recognize what preceded the rise of the two subsequent stages in early Christianity. While the first stage developed from the mainly rabbinic character of the message of Jesus and of the Palestinian Jewish churches, the second stratum of early Christianity embodied in the so called kerygma of the Christian hellenistic communities was indebted to Essenism.
